I am reading Godel, Escher, and Bach, and the thoughts are tumbling out of the pages and manifesting in the world.

The book has recurring chapters fashioned as a Lewis Carroll dialogue. The four conversants are: Achilles, the Tortoise, the Crab, and the Anteater. The dialogue between the characters is usually about naturally occurring phenomena. It is refreshing today to read a conversation where the conversants have differing points of view and yet do not insult one another. Of course, all of the conversants are the author, Douglass Hofstadter.

Now, the discussion is about ant colonies. Anteater is the primary narrator. The description is so akin to the centrally managed social order in Maine that while reading, I forget that Hofstadter is describin…
